However, in most cases, the car can be re-registered directly onto Spanish plates. This depends on the year, the make, the model and whether it has a european type approval number or not.
In most cases we can register your American car tax free. We charge a flat fee of 1,750 euros to register a US import. It does not include the discharge fee or customs clearance charges or new rear light cluster where necessary.
Many cars imported from the USA and Canada are fitted with red rear indicators as standard. These will have to be changed to amber for European roads. The wiring will also have to be changed to allow the ECU (the car's engine management system) to operate normally. In order to do this, we download the car manufacturers software which we use to re-map the ECU in your car. We use qualified auto electricians for this work in order to maintain our high standards of service. Finally, the car will also have to be fitted with a rear fog light and side repeater indicators on the front wings. It will also need a front sidelight bulb fitted into each of the front headlights.
Remember, if you are importing an American or Canadian car, we will need it for at least two weeks. The car will need to be rewired and remapped and an engineer's report issued.
